[Gear Review] Minimalist Footwear…an Ultralight Essential?

As a young United States Marine, training in combat and jungle boots wasn’t just routine, It was an order! When it came time for standard PT (Physical Training) we were able to slip on a more comfortable pair of go-fasters (standard running shoes) that had a padded heel and soles that incorporated shock-absorbing gel. With all of this new technology being implemented, why were so many of my fellow Marines experiencing knee issues that were taking them out of commission? …It wasn’t until many years later that I received the answer to that question: minimalist footwear.

Is Minimalist Footwear Part Of Your Survival Kit

Once I left active duty, my fitness level was certainly not a priority. I gained weight and spent most of my waking moments seated behind a computer screen. I became deconditioned due to the mental battle that I was experiencing as I tried to adjust back to civilian life. Things went on in this fashion for over a decade. One day, I woke up and stared at the mirror… A feeling of embarrassment overwhelmed me. I made a commitment to myself that from this point on, things were going to change.

I went out and got myself some new PT gear. Part of that gear was a high-speed, expensive, pair of running shoes. I started using a treadmill and lifting olympic weights. I began shedding some fat and was feeling pretty good about my decision. A couple months later, I was asked by my cousin to join him on the soccer field to practice with his team. I felt like I was up for the task and took him up on his offer.

Once I arrived at the arena, we started off with some warm-up drills. We began to pass the soccer ball around and on my first strike… I heard a loud POP in my right knee. I headed to the sideline in a bit of a daze, trying frantically to just- walk it off. My knee began to swell so I headed to the hospital. After some time and a battery of exams, the diagnosis was a full tear of my ACL and complete loss of my meniscus.

I was told by the various doctors that I needed surgery. Basically, they would take a ligament from a cadaver and place it in my right knee. I realized that this was a routine operation but something didn’t sit right with me. First off, I was no fan of having surgery… Secondly, there was the source of the ligament. My doctor’s all commented on my hesitation and warned me that without surgery, my active lifestyle would be non-existent.

But I knew that there had to be another way…

As I researched other options to surgery, I kept stumbling upon information on barefoot and minimalist footwear. Basically, people were “fixing” their knee and other issues by removing the technology from their footwear. This was counter-intuitive to what I had come to believe. However, I had been a lifelong martial artist and we were always barefoot in the dojo. I also reflected back on the knee issues that my fellow Marines were having while on active duty.

Things began to click…

What I came to learn from this experience was that we were allowing technology to do the work for us. By adding “high heels” and other technology to our footwear, we were masking the sensations from the activity that we were performing. Instead of strengthening our bodies with each workout, we were, in fact, becoming weaker. We are basically telling our running shoes to do the work while our muscles, tendons and ligaments take a back seat and rest.

I began training barefoot whenever possible and picked up a pair of minimalist shoes. These shoes resembled gloves for feet and certainly brought  a lot of attention while I was out in public. I had various friends tell me that I looked like a duck when I wore those shoes. My reply was that:

I will take function over fashion any day!

Once I made the switch to training in minimalist footwear, things began to change. There was certainly an adjustment period but I knew that I had very few choices if I wanted to avoid surgery. I began to feel stronger and had much more sensitivity throughout the activity that I was performing.  I was getting lots of feedback from my workouts that I had never gotten before. It was working wonders on my physical being but surprisingly, it was also increasing my awareness when I was out in the field.

I continued training in minimalist footwear and contrary to what the medical doctors had advised me… I completed the NYC Marathon in 2011 while wearing my duck shoes. 🙂

This experience changed a lot on how I address my training for emergency preparedness. In addition, there were some interesting by-products that I gained from incorporating minimalist footwear. I’d like to share a few of those insights with you now.

So let’s delve right into it…

Compact & Lightweight:

Since the footwear is designed to be minimalist, they are extremely convenient to stow away in your pack. You can easily roll them up in the palm of your hand. The fact that very little material goes into their construction makes them lightweight whether they are on your feet or stowed away in your kit.

Is Minimalist Footwear Part Of Your Survival Kit?

Keep in mind that the minimalist design does not mean that they are inferior in their construction. As a matter of fact, most of my minimalist shoes have outlasted other footwear that I own; even when the conventional shoes have gotten much less use.

Great For Water Activities:

Once again, less material means that they can dry much quicker than standard footwear. Whether you are wading through a pond, fishing from the shoreline or hiking through puddles… Minimalist shoes, on a whole, tend to perform much better than hiking boots in these instances. I wouldn’t exactly say that all minimalist shoes that I own are designed for water activities, but when compared to their non-minimalist counterparts, they tend to come out on top.

Build Up Your Body:

Less material in your footwear allows your body to participate much more in the actual work being performed. Taking away the “high heels” that most running and trail shoes feature, enables your body to maintain proper alignment.

In addition, your muscles, ligaments and tendons get more activation as you continue on with your task(s). Not only will this build your physical preparedness but also aids in keeping you injury and pain-free.

Wearing minimalist footwear allows your feet to move around freely. The lack of restriction brings a level of comfort that is not matched by standard footwear. Initially, the experience may actually feel like the opposite of what I am stating here. After all, we spent a lifetime wearing restrictive shoes so we need to take that into account. But if you take some time and implement minimalist shoes into your lifestyle, your natural movement will once again become prominent. You will experience a level of comfort that will bring you back to your childhood days.

Is Minimalist Footwear Part Of Your Survival Kit?

Minimalist footwear allows you to feel the environment with each passing step. Twigs, rocks and other debris are easily felt as you continue on with your mission. Maintaining this awareness allows you to gauge the amount of pressure that you will place on these obstacles. This will directly correlate to the amount of disturbance and noise that you will cause as you interact with the trail. Traditional footwear allows you to barrel over obstacles, barely realizing that they are even there. This can easily give your position away whether you are stalking prey or just trying to remain under the radar.

Long Lasting Soles:

Most of today’s minimalist shoes are designed with running and hiking in mind. A large number of manufacturers choose to use a sole made by Vibram. Vibram has been providing soles for the U.S. military for decades and are quite the trusted name. The soles of the boots that I wore in the Marine Corps were made by Vibram. Also, the duck shoes that I referenced earlier… Their soles are also made by Vibram.

Is Minimalist Footwear Part Of Your Survival Kit?

Other companies such as XERO Shoes offer a 5000 mile warranty on all of their footwear. That alone is a pretty good indication of the durability offered by minimalist shoes that are available in today’s market.

Let Your Feet Breathe:

Unlike most conventional shoes, minimalist footwear are designed to be worn with or without socks. This gives your feet the ability to breathe while you are performing work. I have the tendency to sweat and sweat a lot. Wearing conventional footwear usually results in me having to change my socks a few times while I’m on the trail. If I don’t, the annoying blisters and “hot spots” begin to form.

Is Minimalist Footwear Part Of Your Survival Kit?

Wearing minimalist shoes greatly reduces the sweating and need for frequent sock changes. This allows me to pack less gear and alleviates the need of carrying stinky, sweaty socks while I’m working on my current mission.

Shower Shoes:

In a recreational camping environment, there are usually shower facilities available to the public. However, they may not be the most sanitary place to clean up. Wearing shower shoes is recommended and some may say… A Must! Unfortunately, including shower shoes in your kit is either bypassed or just simply forgotten. But with most minimalist shoes, especially sandals, there is no need to pack additional gear.

Is Minimalist Footwear Part Of Your Survival Kit?

As we previously discussed, minimalist shoes tend to dry relatively fast. I shower with my minimalist shoes on which works for me two-fold. 1: I maintain a barrier between my feet and unwanted bacteria and 2: I also get to clean my shoes so that they are ready for the following day’s adventure. I can then place my shoes by the fire or other heat source and in no time, they are dry.

In Tune With Nature:

As I mentioned earlier, wearing minimalist footwear allows you to feel the environment around you. Each step provides valuable feedback to your nervous system about the terrain that you are operating in. This insight enables a much more positive experience with nature because you are paying attention. This will help to pull all of your senses together making your activity more enjoyable.

Is Minimalist Footwear Part Of Your Survival Kit?

Bottom Line:

Minimalist footwear is not for everyone. As I eluded to earlier, there is a bit of a break-in period that many do not have the patience for. Most of us have been wearing conventional shoes for the majority of our lives. We certainly cannot expect to snap our fingers and return to our natural movement overnight. Just like most things in life… If we try to force it, injury usually follows.

Is Minimalist Footwear Part Of Your Survival Kit?

If you are interested in giving minimalist footwear a try, Just remember… Baby-steps will always get you there the fastest.

Free Money: Potential Presidential Candidate Mark Zuckerberg Suggests That All Americans Should Get A ‘Universal Basic Income’

Should everyone in America receive a “basic income” directly from the federal government?  Considering the fact that we are already 20 trillion dollars in debt, such a concept may sound quite foolish to many of you, but this is an idea that is really starting to gain traction in leftist circles.  In fact, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg suggested that this was something that we should “explore” during the commencement speech that he just delivered at Harvard.  For quite a while it has been obvious that Zuckerberg is very strongly considering a run for the presidency in 2020, but up until just recently we haven’t had many clues about where he would stand on particular issues.  If he is serious about proposing a universal basic income for all Americans, that would make Zuckerberg very appealing to the far left voters that flocked to the Bernie Sanders campaign.

Yesterday, I discussed the fact that the number of Americans that are receiving money from the government each month has reached an all-time high, but Zuckerberg would take things much farther.  According to Zuckerberg, society would be far better off if everyone got an income from the government

“Every generation expands its definition of equality. Now it’s time for our generation to define a new social contract,” Zuckerberg said during his speech. “We should have a society that measures progress not by economic metrics like GDP but by how many of us have a role we find meaningful. We should explore ideas like universal basic income to make sure everyone has a cushion to try new ideas.”

Zuckerberg said that, because he knew he had a safety net if projects like Facebook had failed, he was confident enough to continue on without fear of failing. Others, he said, such as children who need to support households instead of poking away on computers learning how to code, don’t have the foundation Zuckerberg had. Universal basic income would provide that sort of cushion, Zuckerberg argued.

Such a proposal is going to look really good to a lot of people at first glance.

But who is going to pay for this?

Of course the truth is that the money for the people that are not working would come from taxing the people that are working.

I don’t think that Zuckerberg has really thought this through.  Are young people going to have an incentive to work if they can just stay home and watch movies and play video games all day while collecting their “universal basic incomes” from the government?

And why would anyone want to bust their rear ends working for a living when their incomes are just going to be taxed extremely heavily to pay for all the people that aren’t working?

We are already 20 trillion dollars in debt, but politicians on the left just want to keep giving even more free stuff to people.  During his presidential campaign, Bernie Sanders suggested that everyone in America “deserves a minimum standard of living” and that every citizen is “entitled” to universal health care, free college education and basic housing…

So long as you have Republicans in control of the House and the Senate, and so long as you have a Congress dominated by big money, I can guarantee you that the discussion about universal basic income is going to go nowhere in a hurry. But, if we can develop a strong grassroots movement which says that every man, woman and child in this country is entitled to a minimum standard of living — is entitled to health care, is entitled to education, is entitled to housing — then we can succeed. We are living in the richest country in the history of the world, yet we have the highest rate of childhood poverty of almost any major country and millions of people are struggling to put food on the table. It is my absolute conviction that everyone in this country deserves a minimum standard of living and we’ve got to go forward in the fight to make that happen.

In previous generations, very few people would have ever taken someone like Bernie Sanders seriously.

But in our day and time socialism is really starting to catch on.  In fact, one survey found “that four out of every ten adults say they prefer socialism to capitalism”

The American Culture and Faith Institute recently conducted a survey of adults 18 and older. It shows not only how deeply divided Americans are on some issues but also how their view of the nation stands in many cases in stark contrast to our nation’s founding principles. Most Americans (58 percent) see themselves as politically moderate, while a quarter identify as conservative, and 17 percent as liberal. Those who were both socially and fiscally conservative, the group tracked by the ACFI in greatest detail, were 6 percent of the population.

But those differences don’t reveal the greatest divide and danger to America’s future. “The most alarming result, according to [George] Barna, was that four out of every ten adults say they prefer socialism to capitalism,” the ACFI noted in its commentary on the poll. “That is a large minority,” Barna said, “and it includes a majority of the liberals — who will be pushing for a completely different economic model to dominate our nation. That is the stuff of civil wars. It ought to set off alarm bells among more traditionally-oriented leaders across the nation.’” That 40 percent of Americans now prefer socialism to capitalism could spell major change to the policies advanced by legislators and political leaders and to the interpretations of judges ruling on the application of new and pre-existing laws.

And as I noted yesterday, Millennials are particularly attracted to socialism.  This could have dramatic implications for our society as older generations of Americans slowly die off.

Unfortunately, there is just one huge problem with socialism.

It doesn’t work.

If you want to see the end result of socialism, just move to Venezuela or North Korea for a while.

In socialist nations, there is very little incentive to work hard.  Instead, people tend to become very lazy and expect the government to provide everything that they need.

When people work hard and are productive, the overall wealth of a society goes up.  And when people sit around and wait for someone else to provide for them, the overall wealth of a society goes down.

Would Mark Zuckerberg have worked so hard to develop Facebook if he knew that the government would just come in and take most of the money away so that others could have a “universal basic income”?

Yes, we want to do all that we can to reduce poverty and to build a strong, vibrant middle class.

But socialism is not the answer and it never will be.

Rant of the Week: California Politician Does The Second Amendment Limbo

I can’t count the number of times my Rant of the Week’s subject has been about liberals who excoriate conservatives for doing something they do all the time. “Don’t do as I do, do as I say,” is a fundamental precept of liberalism and now there’s another shining example of how low a liberal can go.

California assemblyman Evan Low, apparently an avid shotgunner, recently posted a video on his Facebook page showing him handily dispatching clay birds at the Los Altos Rod and Gun Club. Low knocked them down at a rate that would indicate he was pretty darn familiar with the business end of a shotgun.

Now I understand that there are plenty of Democrats who love shooting every bit as much as Republicans but when it comes to Low, it’s a bit perplexing. As a California Assemblyman, Low is not known to be an advocate of the right to bear arms nor a friend of the NRA.

A TruthRevolt.com article relates how Low holds the National Rifle Association directly responsible for mass shootings. According to the May 18th article, shortly after the Orlando terrorist attack Low personally called out NRA lobbyist Dan Reid during a hearing saying, “It’s very difficult for me to sit here and look at you in the eyes and have respect for you, sir, Dan, because – not only because of lives that have been cut because of your organization, mothers and fathers, but many lives have been shattered by it.” Then he goes a little lower.

After reading out loud the names of some of the Pulse nightclub shooting victims, Low stooped still lower by saying none of them could be present because they were all dead and accused Reid of murder.

Specifically, Low said, “Of course, the reason they were murdered was because of basically your organization, which has vigorously lobbied to allow for these things to occur and to acquire weapons.”

Interesting words from a guy who appears to be a shooter and it makes me wonder how many Islamic terrorists he thinks belong to the NRA. Apparently, no one bothered to tell Low that the 49 people who died that night were killed by an Islamic terrorist. As difficult as it may be to wrap your brain around this so far, Low sinks even further.

Assemblyman Evan Low is a major proponent of the idea of making the entire state of California a sanctuary state for illegal aliens. Unless you’ve been tied up binge watching all 30 seasons of The Simpsons, you know sanctuary states for illegal aliens are… well… illegal on several levels.

First of all, illegal aliens are, you know, illegal, period.

Second, many illegal aliens go on to commit violent crimes in the local community.

And finally, declaring a state to be a “Sanctuary State,” essentially a get-out-of-jail-free card for illegals to live there is, in-and-of-itself, illegal. Of course being illegal doesn’t deter the blue states one bit. Being illegal is another of the fundamental precepts of liberalism.

Other brilliant positions Low holds include demanding President Trump’s resignation, or if necessary impeachment, and abolishing the Electoral College. I have no doubt at this very moment he’s hatching another wacky anti-second amendment idea which begs the question – How low, can Low go, I don’t know.

Charlie Cook, also known as GunGram on YouTube, is known for videos featuring both his trumpet and shooting skills.

He recently did an awesome tribute to our men and women in uniform in the form of a video montage in which he performs every song from the Armed Forces on his trumpet while simultaneously shooting his firearm. Now that takes mad skills! The level of concentration playing an instrument and shooting a firearm takes is impressive in itself. Add the two together and it’s magical.

Plus, what a cool way to honor our veterans!

Survival Gardening Hacks To Achieve The Perfect Tomato Plant

In my opinion, no list of survival gardening hacks is complete without tomato tips! There are so many different ways to care for tomatoes – the all natural way. No chemicals required!

Survival Gardening Hacks| 6 Simple Tips To Top Tier Tomatoes

My article, 8 Baking Soda Uses For Your Survival Garden To Try, I listed a tomato plant hack using baking soda. Since that article’s publication, survival gardeners have been inquiring about additional gardening tips and hacks. The one plant that has been inquired about the most? You guessed it…the tomato plant! In this article, I will share with you additional and all natural hacks for your beautiful tomato plants. Let’s begin!

1. Plant Deep

Check out Survival Gardening Hacks To Achieve The Perfect Tomato Plant at https://survivallife.com/survival-gardening-hacks-tomato-plant/

Due to the root system of a single tomato plant potentially becoming quite large, my suggestion is to give them plenty of space in between plants to allow for deep root systems to develop. To give you an idea of how deep their root systems can potentially be, the root system of a seed grown tomato plant can develop a taproot system of up to 5 feet deep! Starter plants can have root systems up to 3 feet deep and the roots are also more spread out than a taproot system. Planting deep and giving each tomato plant adequate space (from each other or from other plants) is key for a nice and healthy tomato plant. If you have limited space, please check out my previous article Container Gardening for Your Patio or Balcony for some great tips on how you can grow perfect tomatoes even in containers!

2. Cow Manure

Cow Manure | Survival Gardening Hacks To Achieve The Perfect Tomato Plant
image by Ian Barbour via flickr

Cow manure is magic to any garden! This hack is known to grow large tomatoes and has been used for years by farmers and gardeners alike. After you dig deep holes for your tomato plants, you cover the bottom of each hole with a layer of cow manure. Next, add about ¼ inch of sawdust on top of the cow manure, then add more soil on top of the sawdust. Finally, plant your tomato plant.

3. Epsom Salt

Check out Survival Gardening Hacks To Achieve The Perfect Tomato Plant at https://survivallife.com/survival-gardening-hacks-tomato-plant/

Epsom salt is rich in magnesium and produces plentiful results for tomatoes, peppers, and other blooming plants. Add 1 teaspoon of epsom salt for every 1 gallon of water. Spray this mixture onto your tomato plants every 1-2 weeks. For this hack, I personally recommend spraying more towards the bottom of the stem and soil area and not directly on the leaves and the actual tomatoes.

4. Eggshells and Coffee

Check out Survival Gardening Hacks To Achieve The Perfect Tomato Plant at https://survivallife.com/survival-gardening-hacks-tomato-plant/

This is what some gardeners call “direct composting” which means you will add composting materials directly to the plant instead of the composting bin. Coffee grounds will add nitrogen to the soil surrounding the tomato plant. Next time you have your morning coffee, save the coffee grounds. Sprinkle an adequate amount of cooled coffee grounds to the soil about once every 1-2 weeks. Eggshells give any plant a nice calcium boost.

Simply sprinkle a ⅛  – ¼ inch layer of crushed eggshells to the soil surrounding the plant. After the shells start to decompose into the soil, it is safe to repeat this process as often as you like. The combo of the coffee grounds and eggshells will give you a beautiful and healthy tomato plant! For more information on composting, check out my article Composting For Beginners | The Building Blocks To A Better Harvest.

5. Raw Cotton

Raw Cotton | Survival Gardening Hacks To Achieve The Perfect Tomato Plant

This is becoming quite popular with gardeners! The purpose of this technique is to hold the soil in place – a mulching technique of sorts. Gardeners swear by this and state that their tomato plants thrive! If you have access to a cotton gin or know someone with a cotton field, collect the cotton needed (after acquiring permission, of course) and simply place the cotton on the soil surrounding the plant.

6. Fish

Check out Survival Gardening Hacks To Achieve The Perfect Tomato Plant at https://survivallife.com/survival-gardening-hacks-tomato-plant/

This an old Native American technique and is another great example of direct composting. Fish will provide calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other vitamins and minerals for your tomato plants. Using this technique will make them flourish! Fish heads are most commonly used for this technique. After you dig the deep holes for each of your tomato plants you just simply drop the fish head in and cover with a good amount of soil. You then add your tomato plant.
